Assessment, I learned, is not only to give a grade at the end of the term. Assessment goes hand in hand with instruction to provide clear and realistic goals for students to follow. A student who is constantly aware of where he stands, and how he can improve is one who is in control of their learning.
During my internship at Thomson Community School I used assessment as a tool for students to understand activity expectations, as well as a means of grading them. By providing the objectives they were to be learning as well as the assessment being used ahead of time, the students were given all the information they needed to create successful projects and reports.
