A teacher needs to strengthen ties with the community outside the classroom as a means of providing relevance to what students are being taught, both in the lessons, and the hidden curriculum.
Activities such as field trips, classroom visits by community heroes (volunteers, Elders, professionals), and social action projects will encourage students to recognize the worth of their community, and will through it find a sense of belonging.
