I believe that a teacher must make all learning materials relevant to their students in order to facilitate learning. Without a good reason, no one is going to pick up a textbook and start reading, so why should students? Students need to first know that what they are learning has relevance to them, so they can apply it, and thereby use higher thought processes.
In order to do this, I start by using the foundational objectives as set forth in the curriculum as a guideline. I then take a look at what my students can best identify with, or best benefit from learning this material. After making a list of lessons that I believe meet this criteria, I then look at the following list to further personalize the lessons to meet the needs and interests of the classroom. These include: C.E.L.’s, M.I., Equity, and Inclusivity.
